It’s been three weeks since we have managed to post a page here. It is surprising that even though we now have very little time-pressure on us, it is quite hard to find the time to sit down and actually write what we are up to. Of course, we also have to have internet service available to post, but we have found that except when we are in the shadow of an island we have service.

So what have we been up to? Whilst in the marina thanks to the cyclone alert, I was quite productive installing another two solar panels, upgrading the solar charge controller, installing a bigger alternator on the port engine, installing a second TV, fixing the autopilot, and generally tidying up. We also managed to install a 3G antenna up onto the mast, with Colleen having her first trip up on the bosun’s chair to lend a hand.

After heading out, we spent a night in Stonehaven where we spent the first couple of hours of our time there dismantling the port toilet to clear a build-up of calcified crap from the pipes. To make up for having to undertake what is a very distasteful job, Mother Nature sent us a bonus in the form of a curious turtle who sat off the rear of our boat watching us for a few minutes. Colleen was quite pleased!

We drank a little too much the night before we headed out so it was a quiet start, however with brisk winds XTsea was soon eating up the miles. We arrived before lunch, but with a bit of chop and both of us still a bit under the weather we decided it was not worth donning the SCUBA tanks. I hopped in with a mask for a look at the twenty or so LARGE fish which took up residence under the hulls. Heading back to Blue Pearl Bay with XTsea sailing well with the wind near the nose.

Back to Airlie for a quick re-provision, we turned around early the next day as we had booked into Hamilton Island on the Sunday and wanted to arrive close to lunchtime to take maximum advantage of the facilities. Spending the Saturday night at Henning Island meant we arrived nice and early.

We picked up my mum and dad from the early Jetstar flight on the Monday morning and started motoring back to Airlie as winds were light and (surprisingly) from the North. Turned off the motors for a quick lunch in the middle of Whitsunday Passage before arriving in Airlie around 3pm. As my parents were taking the car to return it to Melbourne, we had one last provision run before a nice meal of ribs at the club.

We saw mum and dad and the car off early the next morning. We now are totally reliant on our folding bike and shanks pony!

With the winds from the North, we found the Airlie area uncomfortable, so we popped up the coast to spend a couple of nights at Grassy Island. Our anchor held well in the blowy conditions, giving us more and more confidence in dropping the pick.

As we were preparing to leave, the other boat in the anchorage was departing as well. A small blue mono called Pingvin, she looked a little battered from a long life at sea and as she sailed close by her captain advised us that her engine had failed but that they were fine. After we raised our main I looked across to see that she had run up onto the fringing reef and looked to be in strife. I dropped down the tender to go over and see if they wanted help. Yes… they sure did!! The 6HP motor on the tender was not making a lot of difference, so I went back to XTsea, dropped the main, and using the might of the twin 29HP Yanmars, managed to pull them off after a bit of mucking about. Took four attempts before we pulled her stern-first back into open water.

Having a nice sail back to Airlie, we anchored quite close to the shore near the town centre and enjoyed a pizza for dinner. Turned out we anchored a bit too close, and with a very low tide overnight we spent a bit of time with the hulls resting on the sand. A lot of bumps as we settled and then rose, but quite safe on the sandy bottom.

The cruise ship Queen Mary 2 arrived for a day visit. Of course we HAD to pop out and see her, so we took an early morning sail out for a visit. Damn that thing is big.
